Belgium is emerging as a rising star in STEM skills, ranking well in engineering and technology innovation, according to the first STEM Skills Index. While often overshadowed by larger European STEM powerhouses, Belgium benefits from strong R&D investment and world-class engineering institutions, positioning itself as a key player in Europe’s tech-driven future.
The Index, produced by STEM Workforce Consultancy SThree and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr), evaluates countries on STEM education quality, workforce readiness, and industry engagement. Belgium’s engineering sector ranks among the strongest in Europe, supported by robust research funding and advanced industrial capabilities. However, gaps in digital skills and workforce adaptation indicate areas for improvement, particularly in preparing talent for emerging technologies.
“Belgium’s STEM talent is rising, with undeniable strengths in engineering and technology innovation,” said Catherine De Caluwe, Country Director – Belgium at SThree. “With the right focus on digital skills and stronger industry-academic collaboration, Belgium has the potential to climb even higher in the STEM rankings.”
Belgium’s Position in the European STEM Landscape
Compared to its Benelux neighbour, the Netherlands, Belgium still lags behind in AI and digital transformation, where Dutch investments in high-tech R&D have propelled them ahead. However, Belgium outperforms several European nations in engineering, thanks to its well-established research institutions and industrial expertise. While Switzerland and Germany lead in STEM talent development, Belgium’s growing innovation ecosystem signals an opportunity for further growth.
Bridging the Digital Skills Gap
To solidify its place as a European STEM leader, Belgium must invest in digital workforce training, enhance university-industry partnerships, and expand its role in cutting-edge technology fields such as AI, quantum computing, and green energy solutions.
With targeted investments and strategic workforce development, Belgium can capitalize on its engineering excellence and establish itself as a major force in STEM innovation across Europe.
